1 Peter 1:13-15
13. So prepare your minds for action and exercise self-control. Put all your hope in the gracious salvation that will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed to the world.
14. So you must live as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires. You didn’t know any better then.
15. But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy.
16. For the Scriptures say, “You must be holy because I am holy.”
NOTE:
The book of 1st Peter addresses the exiles of Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, during time of persecution for followers of Christ. This letter focuses on encouraging followers as they continue to exemplify Christ in unwelcome environments while reminding us of ways to prevent falling for the enemy’s bait.
Between verses 13-15, there are 4 encouraging reminders:
- Be sober-minded, Sober in Greek translation is Nepho which is to be watchful or self-controlled. As followers of Christ, we should be watchful and aim to have self-control like Christ. How is this possible? Through full surrender and submission to the Lord, praying and fasting for discernment, and being willing to try with trust that the Lord will pick you up every time.
- Set your mind on the grace given because of His name. Grace in Greek translation is Karis, which means Favor or Blessing. Given the context of the time which the first letter was written, this shows the Power of the name of Jesus and the beauty of following Him. The Favors and Blessings the Lord has set aside for His children are one that no enemy can easily steal, kill, or destroy. If you were to speak this verse over your current season and the time we live in, you would find joy and peace in knowing that there is favor set for you from simply acknowledging Christ as your Savior.
- Transformation over conformity. We can’t expect to steward a spiritual lie without going through transformation. Peter explains that it is best to avoid being set in one’s old ways. This is how followers of Christ can easily fall for the bait of the enemy. When you are not fully surrendered , you leave yourself open for easy attacks from the enemy. Although it is not an overnight process, we need to be honest with ourselves and surrender to Sanctification. Sanctification is the process of transformation in which we have to continuously go through with the help of the Holy Spirit. Because of the Blood of Jesus Christ we are able to be sanctioned and made whole.
- Sanctification is mentioned in verse 15: "In all your conduct" (the manner in which one behaves), "be holy"...Holy in Greek translation is Hagios, which is to be set apart. One can only be set apart through submission to Sanctification.
The beautiful thing about the Bible is that you will always get new revelation no matter how many times a verse is read. There are many more revelations you can get from 1st Peter 1:13-15 alone. Throughout this week ask the Holy Spirit for more revelations and be open for a move of God.
Prayer Points:
- Lord lead me to be holy as you have called me to be
- Help me in areas of my life that i have settled I conformity
- Give me discernment to be watchful of what is of you.
